In interior design, harmony is often referenced but not always clearly defined. At its core, harmony is about creating spaces that feel balanced, cohesive, and intentional. It is the thoughtful interplay of materials, colour, texture, and function that allows a space to feel both comfortable and inviting.
When designing the Northlands Village Residences in Whistler, harmony guided every decision behind the shared resident lounge and show suite. This project presented the opportunity to transform existing spaces while responding carefully to their purpose and to the people who would experience them each day.
Situated in the heart of Whistler Village, Northlands Village Residences embodies relaxed mountain living with a boutique, resort-style sensibility. The thoughtfully designed property features 28 strata-titled two-bedroom, two-bathroom residences, offering a rare balance of ownership, comfort, and community in an exceptional setting.
The recently transformed lobby lounge, amenities, and show suite reflect a timeless approach to design. Warm materials, natural textures, and inviting details come together to create spaces that feel both elevated and welcoming. Inspired by the calm of a spa-like mountain retreat, the shared amenities include a hot tub, sauna, pool, gym, outdoor kitchen with harvest tables, and a lounge with a pool table, all set against sweeping mountain views.

Designed to encourage connection and ease, these spaces invite residents to gather, unwind after a day outdoors, or simply take in the surroundings. The show suite carries this same philosophy into a more intimate setting, blending traditional and contemporary elements with layered textures and warm tones to create a home that feels refined, comfortable, and effortlessly lived in.
Whistler’s natural surroundings strongly influenced the material and colour palette. Our goal was to bring a sense of the outdoors inside while maintaining a refined interior that felt aligned with its environment.
Both the resident lounge and show suite were designed to feel connected, offering warmth and comfort after a day spent on the mountain. At the same time, each space needed to feel cohesive and thoughtfully considered, reflecting the quality of Northlands Village Residences.

Bringing the outdoors in
We used natural materials and organic textures throughout both spaces to reflect the surrounding landscape and establish a strong sense of place.
Using local materials
Local materials played an essential role in grounding the design. The stone featured on the fireplace in the lounge was sourced from a quarry in Squamish, creating a meaningful connection to the region. Barn-board was incorporated to add warmth and a subtle rustic quality that feels authentic to Whistler while remaining refined.
Balancing hard and soft elements
To ensure the spaces did not feel overly heavy, stronger architectural materials such as stone, wood, and oak cabinetry were balanced with softer layers. Drapery, pillows, bedding, and upholstered furnishings introduce comfort while enhancing the overall sense of depth, resulting in an environment that feels both layered and inviting.
A warm and cohesive colour palette
We wanted a warm colour palette that would enhance the welcoming atmosphere of both spaces. Consistency in tone allows the lounge and show suite to feel connected, reinforcing a sense of harmony throughout the project.
Thoughtful styling and local touches
Styling was approached with the same level of intention as the architectural elements. Local photographs of skiers and mountain landscapes sourced from the Whistler Museum archives help anchor the interiors to their setting. Books centred on skiing, the outdoors, and mountain life further contribute to a narrative that feels authentic rather than staged.

Harmony is one of the most important principles in interior design because it shapes how a space is experienced. When harmony is present, a home feels calm, intentional, and effortlessly livable. Each element supports the next, allowing the design to feel unified rather than competing for attention.
At Northlands Village Residences, harmony helped transform existing spaces into environments that feel welcoming, refined, and deeply connected to their surroundings. This balance is what allows a design to remain timeless rather than trend-driven.
Thoughtful use of materials, colour, texture, and function can elevate a space beyond its physical structure. It becomes a place to gather, retreat, and feel at home.
